One of our most recent clients, the Huishes, had a dream of one day holding their daughter's wedding reception in their backyard. When that time finally came and the wedding planning started, Mrs. Huish realized it was going to take some major renovation to get both her front and backyards looking the way she envisioned them. And, not only did she need them to be functional for large crowds of people on wedding day, but she also wanted them to feel warm and inviting with a French country flair.
Our challenge was to keep the elements of the yards that the Huishes loved like the mature trees, garden, and back patio, while incorporating in new areas and structures so that they complemented one another and flowed together seamlessly. One of our favorite examples of this is where we took an old poorly used round canopied ramada, and gave it a face lift by replacing it's flimsy metal legs with custom stone pillars, and then repositioning it over a new walkway. Not only was it a beautiful place for the bride and groom to stand and greet guests on the wedding day, but it perfectly complements the surrounding cypress trees and can be enjoyed for years to come.
Dual function was also a priority for the Huish yards, and that became critical in the remodel process as we tried to make sure every area was still usable after the reception had come and gone. Some of our favorite areas are a black and white Cantera life size chess board that doubled as a dance floor, and a cozy outdoor fireplace and pergola area that was used to both warm guests, and offer a backdrop for the cake cutting ceremony.
Although this project was a ton of work, when wedding day came, the Huishes could not have been happier. And, since there are still three unmarried girls left at home, the Huishes are also calling this an investment for the future!
